Unsatisfied With Your Satisfactory Life

November 23rd, 2010 0 Comments

Take the “reality” shows The Hills and The City. How many young people really live that kind of life. It leaves the average woman believing that if she hasn’t launched a clothing line and isn’t carrying a designer purse then she has yet to arrive. Well excuse the rest of us for having to actually climb the corporate latter and pay our dues. Some of us are not carefree trust fund babies that lucked up on a TV show. The show fails to show the blood, sweat, and tears that it takes to truly get someone to finance your clothing line. Not everyone gets to go work for designer Diane von G Fürstenbergin their early twenties. Not saying that I am not happy for this cast of people, but it is nothing close to reality.

What about all the young people that no matter what their profession is they just happen to be rich. Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton are seemingly famous for essentially nothing. True they had sex on tape, but otherwise nothing much but stand in front of a camera. This leaves the impression that you can do nothing and still be rich. This is an absurd concept that our generation has bought into. We want money, power, and respect now, but it is earned. Nothing is just given to you in life. In the real world you buy a $4500 Gucci purse because you earned it and you can afford it, not because you just look pretty.

I was watching the movie Wall Street: Money never sleeps and you have all of these young people wearing the best suits money can by and working in a make believe investment firm making million dollar bonuses. What average young person makes that kind of money? It leaves twenty and thirty something year olds feeling inadequate. It takes time and effort to build prestige and wealth. It does not come as easy as the media will make it seem.

Have you seen the new show Hellcats? You have a broke college student living in a huge apartment. Are you kidding me? Where is her three other roommates like everyone else? Or at least she should be in a much smaller apartment.

The media is constantly showing us these “reality” shows where the “ordinary” citizen lives and extraordinary life. We are growing up in a world that sets the wrong expectation of life. This leaves the average young person feeling inferior because they are not the Executive Vice President of some prestigious company and make six figures. It leaves the woman shopping at a department store feeling less than perfect because she can’t shop at Channel or Gucci.

We wonder why so many young adults are racking up credit card debit, leasing cars, and buying homes they cannot afford. It’s not about keeping up with the Jones: It’s about keeping up with the world. What is the average American to do in a world that looks down upon ordinary and only recognizes the extraordinary? I will tell you what you look for: You un-materialistic happiness level. If money and material things were not a factor, then what would your scale of happiness be? Are you healthy? Do you have both of your parents? Do you have friends? Do you have hobbies that you enjoy? Is God a major factor in your life? Did you have food to eat today? Do you roof over your head? Are your clothes clean and do they fit you well? Then, consider your unsatisfactory life more satisfactory than a good majority of the world population.

I wish there was a show that depicted a real 30 year old. Someone who is still climbing the corporate latter and doing her best. Someone who maybe is wearing a Coach purse as oppose to a Fendi. Someone who sits in a cubicle and drives a Honda Civic. Someone with big ambition, but a regular paycheck. Someone just like me. The good news is that a Coach purse is a decent purse (although I do own a Fendi). There is nothing wrong with working in a cubicle as oppose to not working at all. And some paycheck is better than no paycheck. Also, a Honda Civic is a very reliable car, especially, if you take care of it.

The truth is: As long as you got God, your family and friends, and you are at least working on your career, you have a very good life. You have a good life because it’s your life. You have your own place, your own car, and your dreams. It is up to you to make those dreams come true. Besides, if you are not VP by the time you are 35 you can always just start your own company and be the CEO.

It is no wonder that so many great opportunities past us by because we are looking at what we do not have versus what is in front of us. I once heard a preacher say (I hate that I forgot his name, ugh!): Everything you are looking for is right in front of you. I would like to think that he is right.

Your life is satisfactory. Don’t let yourself forget that while your life could be better, it could also be worse.Your life is your life. You must make the most of it before it passes you by.
