Your People Skills Instantly

November 20th, 2011 0 Comments

The market is flooded with advice, self-help books, seminars, and audio programs to enable you to improve your soft skills, but this is not the goal of this article. Rather than bombarding you with theoretical advice, I will give you three tips that you can instantly apply and at no cost.

Tip #1: Smile and maintain eye contact
Did you know that you can alter human moods by changing your mood when you are around someone? True. I can’t stress the importance of smiling when meeting people. It’s easy and puts both parties in a good positive mood. People love to spend time with upbeat, optimistic people. So when approaching, smile and look up at the person. Whenever the opportunity permits, practice to smile while looking at someone directly in their eyes. This conveys confidence and is not perceived by the other person as hostile.

Tip #2: Stand straight
Non-verbal communication represents more than half of our daily life communication process. It is very easy to have a wrong first impression of a person without even talking to him/her. Avoid poor first impressions by maintaining a confident straight posture when you are standing or walking towards people. Try to project your chest out as it conveys masculinity and strength.

Tip #3: Listen
Yes, being a great conversationalist is excellent but it is only one part of the communication puzzle. The other part is being a great listener. Understanding that every person has a unique way of viewing the world will give you the ability to listen proactively to what people say and drift away as soon as the other person contradicts with your views. Try to develop a state of curiosity when listening to people and you will build rapport quickly with them.

These three tips are essential in any communication medium and will make subtle differences. People will perceive you as a good communicator and will enjoy being around you. The article does not encompass other communication competencies such social awareness, decision-making, and self-presentation.
